1977 Honda CB400F (or my new bad decision)

Picture
Deciding that I didn't have enough projects to do around the house, I purchased the CB on not-quite-a-whim while looking through Craigslist.  The CB400F was a platform I had admired for a while, and thought it would be a neat second moto to have.  This particular CB was a little too good of a deal to pass up: fairly decent shape, with a complete spare engine, a spare rear wheel with tire, and a box of random spares.  And those sexy exhaust headers.  All for $1800.  It was originally going to be $1900, but my buddy talked down the seller.  The ride back was interesting.  Plus it was near dusk and it had a non-functioning tail light.  And a finicky choke, which caused an untimely stall on the on-ramp to the freeway.

Probably to many purists' chagrin, I will NOT be restoring the bike.  It will hopefully see it's new life as cafe racer.  This picture is pretty close to what I'd like mine to become, although colored differently.  Probably a nice British racing green.  Right now, it is ridable and I have been doing short little jaunts around town with it.  Rear shocks are shot.  The seat is well, in a word, horrible.  The chrome is rusted and pitted.  The starter is not wired up -- I've gotten a considerable workout kick-starting the CB.  It is a PROJECT.  The first order of business will be to strip the bike down to the frame and get the that and the swing-arm powder coated black.  Then a carburetor rebuild.  After that, I suppose finances (and my level of enthusiasm) will dictate the direction.

Onto the blog!
